How are you measuring your speeds? what proximity are you to the router? do you have clear line of sight?

54mbps is the max rated speed for 802.11g.

Most Dell laptops come with 54MBit wireless cards.
What router do you have? The wireless connection will only be as fast as the router.
Whats the difference anyway. The wireless connection is 5.4 times FASTER than your cable connection.

Exactly. Your provider probably caps the speed at much lower than 10mbps anyway.

In the UK - ISP's quoted download speeds are the Maximum the end user can expect to see at any time, they are not Sustained speeds.
Average speeds will be much lower than 10mbps & they will fall as more folk in your area connect to the same local loop at the same time as you.
54mbps wireless means the transfer rate is available - but your internet connection isn't capable of using it to its fullest.
