My system is equiped with:
P3-450 on a abit be6 MB
128MB ram PC100
Voodoo3 3000
SB live
Creative DVD 6x and dxr3
Memorex 36x CD-ROM
DLink DFE-320 network card
Digital Research CD-RW (soon to be replaced)
WD Caviar 3.2GB HD
WD Caviar 210MB HD (I know it's old but why not use it)

The question is my system seem to start very slow. My friend has a Pentium 166 and it seems to start faster. Does anybody have an idea of why it boots up so slow?

Thx

You don't say what OS you have. I know that Win98 takes longer to load than Win95. Could that be it?

If you're running any anti-virus software and your buddy's computer isn't, that makes a big difference. My P75@100 boots up a little faster than my P2 266@300 because of that. Plus, your network card is probably searching for an IP address which causes a pause, or something to that effect. I think you can specify an IP address to help minimize that. Good luck to ya...

Look in Windows Startup folder and on the registry to see what stuff you are running at boot-up.

And as Ygor and Eli wrote the OS, antivirus and network card make a difference on boot time.

And remeber to defrag on a regular basis and try www.tweak3d.com (http://www.tweak3d.com) for tweaking most, if not all, windows for better performance... who knows something may be slipping through your eye...

We both are running win98 and we don't have an anti-virus program running. It's not that windows is slower, it's while it's booting up. You know when the windows splash screen comes up and before. It just seems to hang for awhile. But thanks for the advice so far. Anything else it might be?

PS. We are both on a network and we have specfied a IP address.
