My friend bought a Intel 233 w/ MMX and it came with a fan and heatsink. The power plug for the fan is really small with three pins (red, black, and white). There is no where on the motherboard for the fan to plug into. So do you think it will be alright with just the heatsink?

Yes. Use the fan. Some setups come with large, passive heatsinks and can get away without a fan, but generally speaking, heatsinks with active cooling are smaller and only work well if there's a steady flow of air circulating throught it.

I wouldnt cut the wires...id just get a 4 pin to 3 pin converter (power is normally 4 pin, and the small connector is 3 pin)

yes i would use the fan...if there is nowhere
on the mobo to plug in the small connector..
cut the connector off, strip the wire back
and piggy back onto a power connector

Your local radioshack or generic computer store should have a heatsink and fan combo. You can either buy the whole unit and use it, or get it to rob the fan (with a drive power connector) to use on your current heatsink.

If you don't want to cut the wires there are fans that use one of the large power connectors. They have a male and female plug. So you can use them in series and not lose the power connector.
