Hmm, couldn't think of a better place to ask this. But, does anyone know what kind and where to find a harddrive for an old Mac LG 2, or was it LS 2? Something like that. The Quantum 80 meg drive in there now is taking a slow dive into the depths. Someone asked me to fix the thing instead of buy a new computer(Can't figure out WHY myself...) I know little about Macs, but... They do have the System 7 disks... So, here' are all my questions...

1. What size drives(and where to get them online) can I put in this old thing? 80 megs realllly blows in my opinion.

2. What's involved in installing the drive? With good ole PCs, you just need to format it or the like. I'm not sure how to go about doing this with a Mac SCSI drive... It looks just like a regular IDE drive, but with the wider SCSI cable...

Anyway, hopefully, someone here will have had some Mac experience and I can get this Mac out of the way.

It has been a while since I was up on Macs but here goes. Pretty much any SCSI drive with the same connection will do the job. I think it is referred to as SCSI-2 and is a 50 pin connector.

If you are just going to replace the 80, all you have to do, hardware wise is remember to jumper the new drive to terminate and set as te same scsi id as the old one. I think the standard is to set it as id=1.

Software wise, it gets a little more interesting. If I recall correctly, you need to have a special utility to format the drive and it doesn't come with System 7. Apple had a program that worked and I used to have a third party shareware program that would do the job. I can't remember the name but it was something like diskmanager. Before you change out the drive you need to use the working system to make a bootable floppy with the utility on it. Then chang out the drive and boot to the floppy and format the drive.

Once you have the drive formated, it is pretty easy to install System 7. Just put the first 3-1/2" disk in and boot up and follow the directions.

yes you need find a copy of Drive Setup( I think the current one is 1.7.1 or something like that) to format the harddrive. I am not sure where you can get that though. Once you get that then follow the directions and then you let it take its time (is very slow) once that is done, then you are ready to install the os...

hope this helps...

have you tried contacting apple yet?
