I added a scree with my name and address that comes up when my old laptop (WIN98se) is first turned on. I would like to edit the name and address and if possible add the same feature to a laptop running WIN XP home.

JRMtwo 12-13-2005, 01:35 PM Sterling, I am moving and need to change address on the old laptop and the addition of the name and address is very helpful if a laptop is found and needs to be returned. However, the newer systems don't sit on the bootscreen for very long, so it might not be worth the effort. http://www.thetechguide.com/howto/xpbootlogo/ JRMtwo 12-13-2005, 03:16 PM Midknyte, Thanks for the reply. The timing is not a problem as the computer is waiting for a BIOS set password before it will continue loading. I looked at the xpbootlogo page link and it does not look worth all the work to add my name to the bootscreen in XP. However, I would like to change the address on the old WIN98se computer. Can you help? Midknyte 12-13-2005, 03:19 PM uh. didn't you edit the original picture yourself? just edit your logo.sys file. change the file extension to .bmp. edit the picture, then change it back to .sys. JRMtwo 12-13-2005, 03:40 PM I think the text is on the hard disk boot sector along with the text that request the BIOS set password. The logo.sys comes after the password is entered. My problem is I don't remember how to get to the boot sector. Midknyte 12-13-2005, 04:22 PM if it's with the bios password, then it's not on the boot sector. it's probably in the bios somewhere. when all else fails, RTM. JRMtwo 12-13-2005, 04:59 PM The text could be in the BIOS memory if it is not on the hard drive. I must have had a program that would access the text that I have on the laptop. Thanks for your time taken to help. Perhaps someone else has the information about how to change the text. Midknyte 12-13-2005, 05:37 PM well, no one can help you unless you provide more specific info. you didn't even list a brand for the laptop. at least you could give the make and model. JRMtwo 12-14-2005, 07:36 AM Sorry, here is data. Toshiba Satellite 205CDS, P100 cpu, Toshiba BIOS ver 6.30, 12Gig HD using ONTRACK Dynomic Drive Overlay V9.45 to support the larger size hard drive. Midknyte 12-14-2005, 12:53 PM geez that is old. can you even get into the bios? you should be able to get in by holding the esc key while powering on the laptop. it might also be f1 or another key. haven't seen one of those in a long long time. JRMtwo 12-16-2005, 01:44 PM Toshiba has a Utility TSETUP that will display and edit the BIOS. I have a power-on password. An instant password and a supervisor-level password are also possible. JRMtwo 12-17-2005, 07:40 AM Midknyte, Good news, my son found the utility to write and edit the text on the original Toshiba WIN 95 utilities disk. I loaded the utility and now can fix the old laptop. Bad news, the utility does a lot more than just write the text. The utility is to manage the BIOS and would not be usable on other computers. I still like the idea of the owners name and phone number coming up with the power-on password request. This would seem to require a way to write to the BIOS memory and be built into the BIOS setup. This is well above my grade level to solve. If you or someone wants to try to work on this issue I can send a copy of the Toshiba utilities disk programs. SysOpt.com
