I thought i read somwhere that when adding RAM to a Compaq computer, you should buy directly from Compaq. True or False?

It is my understanding that the RAM in Compaqs is proprietary.

A friend of mine bought a Compaq earlier this year and was told she could use generic ram in it.
Compaq will love for you to buy their ram at their prices however.
Is this the 5200 series by any chance?

Partially true. You may have read my reply to a post awile back about really cheap Ram.I checked out the seller through PriceWatch, and it was for certain Compaq models. From what I understand, not all Compaqs are proprietary as far as Ram goes.

I don't know if this will help, but I have installed ram from a Compaq computer in a system I built and it works fine.

What you are probably refering to is video ram and, in some cases, cache chips.
HP and Compaq are bad about add-on proprietary video ram that they charge a bunch for, but I doubt you'll have a problem with regular SIMMS & DIMMS.

If you aren't sure what you need for your Compaq, go to http://www.pcconnection.com
They are an authorized reseller and have or can get anything Compaq. They'll let you know if you need special ram or generic.
