So here's the story, I've got a Sapphire 9800 non-pro flashed to a pro and OC'd.
Had it like that since day one, which is about 2 1/2 years, give or take. No problems, ever. Fast forward to 2 days ago, I see that ATI has released the Cat 5.12's so I decide since i'm on the 5.9's i'll give them a try. I go thru the usual routine of uninstalling the 5.9's and using driver cleaner pro to clean it out, then install the 5.12's, problems arise. On boot-up screen I see black lines running thru the Win2k logo of the load-up screen (I'm running win2k pro) and when it reaches the desktop the icons look all funky and the cursor is black with a black semi-transparent blx around it. After trying to use the computer for a few minutes, clicking around to open the control panel, the screen goes blank and I have to reboot. I decide to go back to the reliable 5.9's but when I boot into Safe mode everything looks screwed, icons are there but are just squares of colors and the cursor is just as bad, when I move it around it leaves a trail of colors and then after a bit of that everything on the screen goes wonkers and looks like those puzzles where if you stare at them long enough you're supposed to see an image of something.
So, after a handful of reboots, it finally manages to boot semi decently and stays running long enough for me to remove the drivers. On bootup after the removal of the 5.12's everything seems fine, no lines or funky colors. I proceed to reinstall the 5.9's and reboot. Boots fine and I manage to get in a few games of CS. Next day, i boot up and the same thing is happening with the black lines running thru my screen, so i decide to set my card back to stock settings and then remove and reinstall the 5.9's. Again it works for a bit but then on reboot it goes back to the same black line screen eventually getting all pixelated and then crashing.
So is my card going bad or is something else causing my problems?

if you ask me illroot i dont think its the graphic card thats causing you a problem, make sure that you insert the card properly into the slot, screw it in properly...else consider checking the AGP slot on your motherboard...get an agp card from someone else, plug it in properly(nice n hard) and if you running xp, dont install the drivers. if the card works then probably there is a chance that your video card has gone wonky...

So the problem was fixed, however I never did find out what was causing the problem. I was planning on installing a new HD into my machine and this made me do it sooner. I installed XP and then the 5.9 drivers and it's been working fine since. Go figure.
