I used to have a 40X NEC cdrom drive and when I played Powerslide there was no stuttering in the video when music played from the CD-ROM drive. Now I have a Sony 6X DVD drive and I get video stuttering in that game when music plays off the CD.
Well I'm not too hot on DVD drives etc but I'm not sure its that I have the same problem and I dont have DVD drive .. it just started happening all of a sudden when there is a lot of activity on the screen ... I'm going to get a new sound card for some reason I've decided it could be linked that somehow

Today I bought a 72X Kenwood CD-ROM drive and now the stuttering is gone in Powerslide. Anyways it's really too early to have a DVD-ROM unless you want to watch movies on the PC and I think I am better off with a super fast CD-ROM if I'm a gamer.
Dave2- Your assesment is correct. DVD isn't really rated to play CD's they just put the rating on to help people understand the speed thing alittle better, but it isn't the same when you go from a 32x cd to a 2x dvd they just arent the same. As far as the jumping and studdering goes. You could have gotten a defective drive. I have a mitsumi CD drive that did that all the time. I got a new drive and presto it worked. BAsically no matter what drive you get now a days you should not have any skipping or studdering unless of course you are on a 486 with win95. /forum/smile.gif

It was not defective because I tried 2 of the same out and both stuttered. I heard the some CD-ROM drives block the CPU signals when music is playing from the CD and this may also apply to some DVD drives.
One thing to be cautious of in super high speed CD-ROM drives - it's best not to put old CD's ( late 1980's )in them. I've heard night-mare stories of slightly off-balance CD's breaking drive components because they vibrate so bad at such high speeds. The sound is like a CPU fan blowing a bearing and coming apart. Same thing for CD's that have warped in a hot car - keep them out of that drive.
