I just built an ATX machine. It has a power button and reset button in front and no button on the power supply. The only way I have to turn the machine off is to tell Windows 98 to shut down. When I boot to DOS the only way I can shut down is to cut power to the machine. When I press the power button from DOS the machine goes into Standby, hit it again and it comes out of Standby. What am I missing? I must have some BIOS setting wrong, right.

with a ATX machine to "Turn OFF" the power you need to push the power button and HOLDit for up to 4 sec's. It will then turn off the power /forum/biggrin.gif (the reason you have to HOLD the button in for 4 sec's is so that the powersupply can figure out that you are not trying to suspend the machine)

You may have the power switch connector hooked to the SMI (standby) connector on the motherboard. Look carefully at the manual and the board to make sure. There is also a setting in the bios (advanced menu in an Award bios I believe) that has something to do with the power button. It may be set a bit odd and could cause something like this, in theory.
