Hi!
So, I've got a cd with some apps a friend burned for me but my cdrom won't read it. It just makes a half-hearted spin and stops. Does anyone know of a utility that will "force" a cdrom to spin up enough to read crappy cdr's?
thanks
I'll bet your CD-ROM is possibly an older model - you need a newer CD-ROM drive to read a non-commercially burned CD.
Possibly, going on the web and getting a newer driver for your CD-ROM will allow you to read the CD.
Basically, it's like you had a hard disk that was missing it's FAT - the CD-ROM doesn't know how to read the disk.
Another possibility is that your friend didn't burn the disk right. I.E. - if you don't burn the disk all at one time, with some older programs, the disk will only show the first program or song burned and everything else becomes noise.
I'd check into getting a new driver for your drive on the web first, but your drive may not be set to read CDR disks.

Its a fairly new ARTEC 50X cdrom and I've got the latest drivers. I've accessed this cd before on this cdrom- its just giving me a hard time now for some reason.

Hello,
There are a few posibilites: one that the cd was not created properly i.e the table of contents were not writen or corrupted. The second possiblity is usually applies to older CD-ROMs----they don't read certain CDR's with different dies. Your CD-Rom is new so i don't think this is not the problem. Try the CD in a different mechine and see whether it reads the CD. If not i am pretty sure the CD has a flaw when created.

another possibility is that the CD was created with Direct-CD.
If so ...load the UDF will allow you to read it in a standard cd-rom. check out this link for details:
