Getting "Regsvr32 performed an illegal operation...general protection fault in module KRN386.exe at 0001:00007bc4" msg. when installing Win98 on a new system. I have a PC100 integrated motherboard and a fairly new 4.3 gig Samsung HD. I do the install from scratch (i.e. the hdd is formatted with nothing in it. This msg. pops up when setup is "updating system settings". It keeps popping up throughout this part, and I just keep clicking "close" all the way thru. Then, when it's "Personalizing settings for Internet Explorer", the msg. "Runonce caused an illegal op...invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 015f:bff9dba7" appears. I click "close" and then it says "Could not copy from 'c:\windows\jscript...". After the install is complete and all the hardware configured, while working in windows I get "Explorer...performed an illegal op.". Can anyone help me with this?

Memory seated well?
Tried another 98 disc? Triple check your case to mobo connections.

When you formated your drive did you use a win98 startup disk? Did you set the drive up for fat 32? How was the drive set up before you installed it in the new system? last are you installing from a known good win 98 CD? I know all I have is questions but they might help.

This is probably not the case, but it never hurts to ask - are you 100% sure that you have the full blown win98 CD and not just an upgrade CD?

Hello,

I agree with Butchk's valuable questions. I will use a win 98 start up disk to deleate the partion, recreate the partion, reformat the drive, transfer system files from the win 98 startup disk, reinstall win 98. good luck.

This may not be the cause of your problem but your motherboard's bios likely has an anti-virus program built in. You might want to go into your cmos and temporarily disable it before you install Windows (just to rule that out). Don't forget to enable it after the install.
