Hi. I, like most of us, like to boot and have as many sys resources as I can. I want to remove my scanner from running in background and appearing in systray. It's a Visioneer USB. When I go to tray and disable it, I free up 3% more sys resources. How can I prevent the scanner from loading at boot? and if disabled, will that interfere with scanner usage when I opt to scan once or twice per month?

Also, after ctrl + alt + del, which items MUST be left running in background?

My system is Celery 333mhz mmx, 128 meg sdram, Win98se, Memorex cd-rw, cd-rom, 13 GG HD.

Thx.

If you have win98, run msconfig and uncheck it from the list under the startup tab. If you have win 95 remove it from your startup folder.

Start > Programs > Accesories > System Tools > System Information > Tools > System Configuration Utility > Start Up.....then uncheck what you you don't want to load.

As for Ctrl Alt Del....I belive you have to have explorer and systray running...but not so sure.

Since your running win98 just go to
start
run
and type in msconfig

Then go to startup tab and uncheck the items you don't want to load. On the general tab check the box for selective startup. You might want to check that one first though.

systray and explorer are the only thing you need running.remove all items from startup, use msconfig to turn off all others, and some really great proggies(sarcasm)will put a reference in the registry in the run or runonce folders that will cause them to load at boot. This is where you will most likely find the scanner culprit, although it does depend on what the manufacturer did.

Hi Brangwen,
There's a really neat freeware program called Startup Cop (http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/pctech/content/18/08/ut1808.001.html) that comes highly recommended.
It allows you to disable any application on bootup. Later, if you change your mind, you simply enable it with a click of the mouse. Try it, you'll like it.

Another quick way to check the start-up group in win 95 is to right-click the gray area of the start bar - properties - start menu programs - advanced - programs - startup
Some stuff like PCanywhere won't show here. There is a setting within that program which will restart it upon boot that does write it's start-up into the registry.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I never knew about run: msconfig. Incredible what one can learn on this site. Thx to all who posted so far /forum/smile.gif
