I've narrowed down my restart problem, which is intermittent. Just about the time when the
connection is made to the server, the screen goes blsck and the computer restarts as if it
not shut down correctly. It goes thru the scandisc thing, nut there no problems after
it finally gets going.????????????????????
Is it the software or possible the modem or both?????? any info greatly appreciated

the pickel

When I reformated my hDD, the tech support guy had me change slots for the modem since we couldn't get it working in the original slot. Does this give a clue??/

BC: I've checked everything in the device mgr
and found no conflicts. " This device is working properly" for everything. Hasn't restarted in 2 days. Runs great. It's blows my mind when all of a sudden I get the black screen and restart. As long as it doesn't do it when my wife is working, I can live with
it. Life goes on!!! Thanks for asking ED

Finally called tech support. He had me reset graphics accelerator and download "Direct X"
I observed the problems other guys were having with the '7' version so i downloaded the '6'. He said the video settings caused
the spontaneous restarts with modem and internet applications. Maybe this might help some one else with similiar problems (if it works) Only time will tell!

No restarts in three days. Adjusted "Receive Buffer" to full... finally got over 50,000bps.
Why is everything working right?? Somethings
gonna happen, I just know it. /forum/biggrin.gif

Have you had the modem working on the same computer previously?

Vampiel: It's the one that came with my computer, but one thing after reformat it doesn't dail as loud as it did before but when I send as fax it dails normally. Got me baffled. Yesterday ran for 12-14 hours on and off the net with no problems. Device mngr
says A OK , registry check OK, Norton sys monitor OK, Dragged, Optimized ,all applications seem to work OK. I'm at a complete loss. pickel

All info in Bellsouth folder indicates that
all is set up correctly.I just renewed my
account for the upcoming year since it's only $99.00 for the whole year and verified my records on line. I'm seriuosly considering getting a new modem. Know a good one???? Since we had so much trouble setting this one up after the re format, I'm convinced that it's either the driver disc or the modem itself.

Do you know if you have your DNS settings correct? If it does it when it connects with the server that could be it. I didnt have my DNS settings set for midspring and I couldnt even log on to the isp |( Yet other ISP's I could fine so it can cause prob's especially if they are set but the numbers arent right.

Are there any conflicts with the modem and anything else?

I don't believe bell-south software has anything to do with your problem - their software, for the most part, sets up the connectoid under dial-up networking to access your modem and dial their number - that's about it.

That said - what kind of computer and what kind of modem? Wonder why the tech support guy said move the modem?

If moving the modem worked, but you see no conflicts on the device manager screen, then there is a chance you either have a bad mobo or possibly ( unlikely ) one or more viruses on your system.

From what you've written, I'm assuming you have an internal ISA modem. Should you choose to buy a new modem, get an external model so you can see the lights on the modem and you can turn it off and reset it without turning off your system. Don't forget the com cable when buying the modem.

I use US robotics non-winmodem type modems and have a wisecom modem at home.

Axel.. I have a Pionex w/ AMD 300@ 350, a
Lucent winmodem( MDP 3800) no conflicts in Device Mgr, Norton Anti Virus scaned regularly( updated every monday) I'm trying different software combos on start up and while running in hope of eliminating an offending program. Gotta keep trying. Maybe you might know something I don't. New modem
will be last resort. Rather find out what's wrong, it's become a vandetta!! Thanks!

Axel going to CompUSA this weekend to check out "Buddy" supposedto "clone" your computer
without loss of speed and share ISP, will
look into external modem then .Thanks
Any particular brand I like Creative products

Win-modems are evil - I'm thoroughly convinced of that - trashed mine. That's my bet - you'd do better replacing that piece of junk regardless of whether it solves your problem. - get a nice external 56k modem - as long as it isn't a win modem - make sure you uninstall any winmodem device driver before adding the new one. reboot in safe mode and make sure you remove anything associated with the win modem. best of luck.
