Talking about that little yellow speaker icon up in the systray? That's Windows'.
You can try the following:
Uncheck the Volume Control box in Multimedia; under the Windows Setup tab; from Add/Remove Programs, to remove the Volume Control.
After it uninstalls, recheck the box and it will reinstall it from the Windows CD.
This might help regain the functionality of the thing.

The cause of this is probably that the volume control box is displayed "off screen". In other words the box is displayed but at a place far off the screen coordinates. I fixed this on my system by changing the X and Y coordinates in the registry. On my system the X and Y coordinates are located here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Applets\Volume Control\ESS AudioDrive Mixer (220)
On your system the last part "ESS AudioDrive Mixer (220) is probably different.
Other than that it is probably easier to use Bleeding Edge's approach.
Good Luck.
