CD Tray - In & Out

Goofiest thing I ever saw, on my wife's PC you hit the button on the CD player and the tray comes out and goes right back in. Nothing's changed that I know of. Its a Memorex 36X.

Any ideas appreciated.

Duh, don't ask me where the thinking cap was. Yes it looks like it's all hardware, same thing when I click on eject. Even got the same think while at the shutdown screen.

Instead of opening the tray with the button, have you guys tried right clicking on the CD drive icon and ejecting the tray from there? Does it still happen?

If not, it may be a some problem with the button. Definitely CD hardware. Unless there is some type of annoying virus that can cause the the eject signal to register twice instead of once, therefore , the symptom of the tray opening and closing.

I guess another thing could be the data cable has a small nic in it somewhere on the wire that carries the eject signal...uhmmm, I not sure what else it might be.

So what? uhhh..let's see, remove the CD drive and take off the face cover. Maybe give it a good blast of compressed air to clean anything out that might be behind the button area. Run a virus checking utility with an updated virus definition data base. Replace the ribbon cable. Get a replacement drive.

I'm probably missing something obvious but that's all I can think of for now.
