Hello,
I beg for help. Last week I inserted two new harddrives( KA9.1, cx 13.1 )into my system( cel 300a, abit bh6 ). since then the computer does not power up any more, the screen remains blank and there are only long beeps to be heard frequently, which do not stop.
Sometimes it did start, but locks up after half an hour.
My local dealer says that it's the Ram
Is this true?
Thanks for any replies. Henrik
Most likely, your dealer is correct. You might have zapped the RAM with a static charge off your fingers while seating the IDE cables attached to your hard drive.
How many sticks of RAM do you have? If you can take some out, and run on only 2 out of the 4 sticks, you might find that only a stick or teo are damaged. Remember that you need to run SIMMS in pairs. Also, reseating the RAM might help - you might have only jarred it loose. Could also be a bad IDE cable. Did you use the cable already in the system, or one that came with the new hard drive? - Try reseating the IDE cables, and replacing them if the RAM idea doesn't work. Lastly, did you "force" anything? Possibly a bent pin at the hard drive or on the mobo, but that wouldn't explain how you sometimes started up. Best bet is fried RAM.
Yes you might want to try taking out all but 1 stick if you just have 1 then that maybe your problem. (they are DIMMS my friends) Abit BH6 and a celeron 300a If you are trying to overclock this celeron make sure you have pc100 memory. If you don't try and slow down the CPU. If you have already bumped it up to like 450 and can't get it down clear the cmos. What might also be the error codes you are getting is a video error. But It is normally short beeps instead of long ones.
Hope this helps ya out,

Axel has given you some good advice based on the information that you have given. If you can give a bit more information I think you could get a better picture of whats going on.
1. What kind og RAM do you have?
2. Does you motherboard have any built in RAM? (Most have some.)
3. When you said "Sometimes it started" you meant fully loaded Windos9x right?
4. What king of system do you have?
If your Mobo has some on board RAM remove all the extra anst start with just the Mobo. If you get to a message that reads something like "Not enough Memeory to fun Windows......." Then you can almost bet on the RAM being the problem. The fix depend on the type of memory that you do have. Good luck.

Thanks a lot for your answers. I use 1 pc100 Dimm-module(not built in, 1 year old, always working without any problem ). I tried to reseat the module several times, but it seems to stick perfectly ( the power supply unit makes it a bit difficult to reach down there).
When the comp mysteriously started I installed Win98 on the Quantum CX13.1, which has been partitioned fully as primary partition. But it locked up several times during installation. I'm wondering why the installation routine did not allocate any error at system check ( while loading himem.sys for example ).
I also remember now that Windows detected an error while loading himem.sys during "testmem ". But I thought it was because of a corrupted registration ( I got those error messages at win98 start some days before inserting the new disks.
I also tried to remove the Ram module and only leave the video adapter inserted. As this did not work, I changed the Matrox Mystique against the Ati Rage of my second computer, which is OK. But also nothing happened.
So my system contains:
Abit BH6, cel300a, one 64MB Dimm, Matrox Mystique 2MB( how sweet ), AWE32, ISA network adapter ( not important, i think ).
self-assembled.
I do not overclock the cel300a.
So, slowly i'm beginning to realize that presumably my Ram is the guilty one.
I hope i may lend a module to control.
Thank you very much for your help and the time needed for helping me.

Surprisingly my module either works in another system up to now.
But, thanx to all who helped me with my problem.
