BALTIMORE (AP) -- City streets are getting darker because thieves, some disguised as utility crews, are stealing 30-foot light poles, authorities said.

About 130 aluminum light poles have vanished this fall from locations across the city, despite the difficulty of carting off the 250-pound objects.

The culprits have even dressed up as utility crews, city officials say, and placed orange traffic cones around the poles they are about to take down to avoid making motorists suspicious. Police have no suspects in the thefts, first reported in The (Baltimore) Sun.

Police say the thieves could be stealing the poles, which cost the city $750 each, to sell as scrap metal. For at least a decade, authorities suspect drug addicts have ripped metal pipes, radiators and wires out of vacant houses to pay for their next fix.

Scrap aluminum brings 30 to 35 cents a pound, according to local metal dealers.

Local salvage yards haven't reported seeing any of the stolen poles, perhaps because of a city ordinance requiring scrap-metal dealers to record personal information of people bringing in metal goods.

Some who work there, however, say they wouldn't be surprised if the poles were being sold somehow.

"They steal everything here in Baltimore," said Lynn Smith, manager at Modern Junk & Salvage Co. "Nothing's too kooky to me anymore."

The problem is not new. In 1988, authorities in New York accused two men of prying off pieces of the Brooklyn Bridge and selling them to a scrap metal dealer. Damage to the historic span was estimated at $37,000.

ROTF, Yeah JM but hey have made at least one arrest so the story is a little off. I live outside that wonderful city, the whole inner city needs to be bulldozed or bombed and then rebuilt with a plan.

It is old, run down and infested with lowlife. On the outskirts it is OK but I am still thankful not to have a B'more address. It is a stigma I really wouldn't want.:D

I wish they'd come and nick some of the eyesores my local council has had erected as lamp posts. Theres a roundabout near my place that has 3 different styles of metal poles and also a solitary wooden one. It just looks stupid!

They cahnge ours quite frequently .......... Its just plain odd ....... We had concrete ones , but the saftey chaps said if owt hits em they will just collapse & hurt somone ........ So they put steel ones up ......... Then the dogs piddling on em made em rot ........ So they was in danger of falling ........ Now we back to concrete ............ But I noticed they have put some shiney metallic new ones up too so they could be err ????????? I dunno..... I recon Rubber is the way to go ......... Would make it easier to change the bulbs too ;)

I'd love to see some pics of that :)
Espeially if the winch breaks with a workman hanging on to the pole.

Its quite easy to stop dogs widdling on poles and such. You just heap some concrete up into a conical pile at the pole's base, when they lift their rear leg to pee they just fall over.
I saw it on one of those backyard makover shows a few years back where a woman had replaced her rotary clothesline 3 times cos the dog diggle kept corroding the post.

The urinating dogs? Betta call the RSPCA.
Then send the little firebugs over to me, I know several dogs that are prime immolation candidates.

Don't hold back Genesound, tell it like it is. Fetid cesspool is being too kind, the bowels of hell would be more appropriate. :D

Maybe even that is being too kind, but I can't really think of anything or anyplace worse. That city is just a wasteland. I have to go into it every couple of months and dread it every time.:(
