Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : To Partion or not to Partition that is the question.
Can anyone one of you settle the arguement. When using a large hard drive, like 6g. And you want to install Win95, is it still wise to just create a 500mg parition for the operating system? By partitionning your drive you eliminate loss space on your drive. If anything get crappy on your C: you can easily format it and re-install it the os. Meanwhile, since Win98 is a 32 bit version, is it better to just install the op on the 6g drive?
Thank you for you input.

I have an 8.4GB drive and split it 2:6.4,
with Win98SE, Office, and system utilities (virus checkers, winzip, etc) on C:, and everything else - art package, games, downloads etc on d:
Needless to say, I have 400MB left on D: and 1.2GB left on C: /forum/smile.gif
Your ratios may vary, but that gives an idea of the scale of things. I think the most important thing to do is place your swapfile on the same partition as your OS!

I just don't understand what you are trying to accomplish by keeping the Win 95?
Yes, you can partition the drive but the 16 Fat partition can't read anything stored on the 32 Fat partition. You may run into driver problems starting up Win 95 or Win 98 and the best way to handle that would to have a bootable floppy for when you want to run Win 95. A load of misc. problems to solve. PAIN IN THE **** to the Nth degree.
Basicaly unless you have a darn good reason, dump the Win 95. Post the reason(s) why your cousin wants to keep that darn Win 95. Maybe the other members can find a way to use just Win 98.
OK..basicly i wanted to hear if you partition your dirve do you lose some space? if so how much. Win 95 was mention for comparaision with Win98. A friend of mind keeps saying there no need to parititon the drive with win98. I say it wise to partition and only reserved the C: for operating system.

There is also the defraging problem. If you drive is large it takes for ever. keep drives small and managable. I have a 10G split into 3G windows and progs, 3G data and games and a spare 4 which i haven't neede tp use yet.

Got it. Well your both basically right but depending on your own preference It might be a good idea to partition a windows 98 drive. For example, someone might be "Tweaking" their system all fo the time and have to constantly be installying windows because they went and did something that they can't simply undo easily.
In Win 98 it just really insn't normally needed.
As for the Windows 95 being partitioned with a dual OS with Win 98. Bad Idea in MHO.

I have a boot partition and an image partition. The boot partition is 500M and the image partition is 500M; both are fat16.
I use DriveImage to image the boot partition and store the compressed image on the image partition.
When I have had a problem, I just restore the image. /forum/smile.gif
If I have to do a clean install I don't have to worry about backing off important files, just format the boot partition and re-install all the software.

Thank you all. It really what I want to hear. And yeah, i do prefer to use 500mg for C: and install the OPSyst.
Again thank, my next plan is to install WinNT and Linux (redHat)..wish good luck, i'm heading to hell hehehe

I have a 20 GB running Win98 SE and it is partitioned with 4.5 GB for OS and stable apps like Office... The rest is for downloads, images, Netscape and other frequently shifting apps and data. IMO it makes for a quicker system with little or no space lost.
