I tried out a program recently called Powerleap that was supposed to monitor my cpu and keep it cool when it was working hard. In fact, my temp went up when I ran it on my otherwise idle system, so I removed by going to the add/remove programs in the control panel. It said that it was uninstalled sucessfully and I thought that that was the end of it. Now every time I boot or reboot the system, windows keeps looking for powert.exe and I do not know how to tell it to stop looking. How do i get this to go away?

Start, Run, type in REGEDIT, click beside HKey Local Machine, Software, Microsoft, Windows, Current Version, then open the folder called Run.
Look for the .exe you mentioned, if found, right click on it, choose Modify, delete.

underclocked...
the place where you mentioned it would be did not contain the offending .exe so I performed a search of the registry and it was a level further down in AppPaths or something like that....i deleted it then...thanks though for the direction....

Have you tried going to start --> run --> and typed msconfig? if not try that, and click on the startup tab, and see if you see anything that resembles that file on there...if ya do unclick it.

chipbgt has the answer. It will be in the startup tab of the msconfig utility.

Did a search for ptsnoop and found this post on another message board.

"ptsnoop.exe is a trojan that is transferred by openning an up an email. ptsnoop is hidden and will automatically execute in hidden mode. it allows the users of ptsnoop to have real time internet access to your computer and control it too while you are dialed into your ISP (internet service providor). these types of programs are called "worms". it hides itself on your hard drive after executing and has the ability to transfer elsewhere once aboard. to remove it you must find a trustworthy program that will sweep it from (clear it off of) your system. in network environmentsptsnoop may take weeks to clear off. also when clearing it off it is advisable to NOT be hooked to your ISP when doing so. in network environments the whole system should be sweeped at once or the sweep will have little effect. i suggest sweeping single computers once a week to check for any such device. the troublesigns of ptsnoop that stick out the most is that your system is bogged down (functions very slowly), programs are coming up with unusual errors, and when shutting down the pc after being hooked up to your ISP occaisionally there is the message "ptsnoop has performed an illegal function and will be shutdown" or something similar."

Might want to consider getting rid of it.

thanks ktwebb...
yeah it sounds like I would want to get rid of it. is there a program I can download that will delete it entirely? i know its in the registry and in my startup folder, but it could be anywhere else....and it is annoying...wonder where I could have gotten it from...

yep that was the problem....thanks guys...

one question though, what the heck is ptsnoop good for. its this file that always gets loaded up, and every so often it hangs up Eudora or a telnet session....
should I get rid of it???
