Hi

Here is the situation.

I have a PII 350 on a Gigabyte BX2000.
I want to have more CPU power and I have 3 options
1) keep my PII 350 and try to reach 450 by overclocking it
2) buy a CeleronA 500
3) buy a PIII 500

Money is not an issue, it is in the "PC budget" to upgrade the CPU.
I will NOT change the mobo.
I am running NT4 sp5 and will upgrade to Win2000 as soon as possible.
I am also running Win98 as I play a lot a games.
My PC config is: RAID0 IBM 22Gxp (2HD), 256MB RAM, Mill G200, Voodoo II SLI, SBLive

Any suggestions much appreciated !

Stan

Try clocking first. You might graze 500, if your MB supports FSB speeds that fast.

Buy the p!!!450 and clock it until it smokes! Well maybe you should stop just before it does, but you know what i mean.

The c500 is good o/c if you like it small and cheap but i guess you donīt just like the rest of us! You should consider yourself lucky to get to 622, that would be on a 83MHz bus.

p3450 LIVES!!!

I might have to trade my P3 450 for a 500 and go for 665!

558/600 just doesn't get it any more!

I am not sure what chips your mobo supports, or how good it is for overclocking, but It seems like the rest of your system is performance oriented and as you said price is not a concern. For that reason I would get a p3 and not a celeron. I have a celeron 400 at 500 and am happy with it, but would rather have a p3. If your mobo supports it, you can get a p3 450 guaranteed at 600 from members.aol.net/pretestedcpus (http://members.aol.net/pretestedcpus) I would get their heatsink as well. This would be faster than a p3500 stock, and I hear that the 500's won't oc much past 600 anyway, so it would be the fastest deal for the money. Before you go with the oc'd 450 make sure your mobo can handle it(your ram as well)

Hi Stan,
wait a few weeks, then look at what's on offer as new system then network the two, keep what you like (it's comfy and get the lastest speed monster)

Thanks for the replies guys... still dunno what I gonna do...

No probs for my mobo, it is 3 months old and can hanlde PII and PIII, as well as CeleronA.
FSB does support up to 133MHz and multiplier up to 9.

So, you reckon I should buy a PIII...
Will wait another week or so before making a decision...

Thanks

Definitely go with the PIII. I have a 350 in am Abit bx6-2 and it doesn't even like "turbo" speed. I found out that the 350 is the toughest to overclock too late. (unless you have one from the first month of producton I hear)
The prices have dropped so much recently on the PIIIs that I am hoping to get a 500 rather than a 450 at some point. Good luck!

It's me again...

I have another suggestion...

I have a Supermicro P6DBS (dual CPU, on-board SCSI).
Should I keep my Gigabyte BX2000 and change the CPU to a PIII 500MHz, or should swap with the Supermicro and add another PII 350MHz ?

Comments ?

Thanks

Hi Stan will dual board take P11 500 if so why not look at a pair of them they should be droping in price, as for the other system I think it might be Vapour ware as I have not seen any thing more about it in the MS OEM BBS.
