Hi again!

I am running win 98. I have a mach one sound card. In the device manager, there are no red X's or yellow exclamation marks. However, my sound is silent. When I click on the speaker icon in the system tray to get my volume adjustments, there is a small, quarter to half inch green line in the wave volume slot. The slot where the line goes up with the volume (signal) of that particular control (wave)

Evidently, something is "using" the sound system. When I warm boot, (ctrl/alt/del) I see nothing running but explorer and systray.

If anyone could help me here, I would greatly appreciate it.

Going nuts here!!!

Thanks,

Mike P.

still working on this one. Still no sound. No X's or !'s in dev manager. Nothing. I can hear the sound card "start" when win is about to load, and then it gets louder when windoze starts.

I could really use a hand on this one.

thanks for any help you can give me

Mmmm, I'm at a loss with this one...

When you go into Sounds in the Ctrl Panel are you able to get the preview arrows in black?
The only other thing I can think of is that you have the speakers plugged in wrong on the back of the card.

Edit> you hear sounds when WIN starts?

yes, i get the black arrows in sounds, but when i try to play (preview) them, it sayd sound card may be in use.

No sound at win startup, or any other system sounds, though cd's do play

Thanks

Check your DMA usage. If you are trying to use too many DMA channels, more than you have available, the sound card may not work. And as I found out, you may not get any obvious signs like the exclamation marks. Also, check the IRQ the sound card is running on. Mine was running on 10 for some reason and when I switched it to 5 it finally worked. You should also see an option to use a different configuration like 000, 001, 002, 003. Try switching to those(in the properties option through device manager)

Try uninstalling and then reinstalling all your Multimedia from the control panel, add/remove, Windows setup.
Just saw the cd playing remark, so wiring must be okay??

The old ctrl/alt/del doesn't show nearly everything that's running. Go to system tools, system information, click beside software.., running tasks and see what's there.

Checked irq's, only ones sharing are with the one card, and an irq holder for pci steering. Other than that, there are no multiple devices on a single irq. Oh yeah, and the sound card's on irq5...

Checked under system info. I have 3 ( i think) open dma's... so......

I guess we go from here...

Oh yeah, I tried to go to a different configuration in dev man, but the only option it gives me is 000. And the sound card is on irq 5...

Thanks, and I'm sure with help from you good people we'll get this thing nailed down. Any more suggestions will be greatfully welcomed...

Okay, do you have the latest drivers?

You could try putting the sound card into another slot also.

And/or remove it completely from device manager and remove any software that came with it, reboot and re-install the drivers and software.

Okay, went to add/remove programs, killed the sound card software. Shut down machine and switched pci slots. Rebooted and Windoze found and installed it. Badda Boom, Badda Bing!

Still no sound!

Oh well...

Try plugging in some other speakers of headphones instead of the seakers.
Mmaybe it's the speakers, not the sound card...

What is your system, motherboard and cpu wise?

Okay, I have a DFI motherboard, 1mb cache, 32 mb EDO (yuk!) ram. p200mmx. VIA Apollo MVP3 chipset, Award Bios, (flashed the bios within the last month...)

A mach one sound card. I have the original cd for the sound card, and have made sure I have the correct drivers from it.

Here's a question?

I never thought to check this myself before, but I notice it now. When I boot up, shortly after the autoexec.bat runs, and before win starts, I hear the sound "start." Does this happen with your system? See, I never thought to listen before, but now, of course, I notice this... Now, when windoze loads, it (the "white noise") gets louder, I'm guessing because I have the 3D option enabled, and it doesn't kick in 'til win loads. But does any one else notice their sound starting, or "initializing" before win starts?

Thanks so much to all of you...

Mike P.

Whats the chances you just have a bad sound card?

Try REMing your Autoexec.bat and Config.sys

You have Windows 98? You can run MSCONFIG from RUN in your start menu and easily disable Autoexec.bat and Config.sys.

Okay, now it seems to be that I can get EITHER my sound card OR my nic working, but not both! Imagine that!

So, it must be a conflict with either dma or irq's. But, I can't seem to resolve this.

Now for the first time ever, I'm getting an out of memory message. Never got one of those before...

Can't run any wizards, always get that responce...

Tried loading windoze over the top, via the cab files on my hd, but still have problems. Lost disk, so have no alternatives.

If any one has advice regarding loading over the top, please post.

Thanks for any help in this matter

Good Luck In All
