This is a chip that identifies the ram and its specs to the m/b's chipset. While its contents can vary, it usually includes timing information so the chipset can optimally access the memory chips. Some chipsets use it, others don't (but the memory will still work on these, too). Many m/b's just ignore it and use default timing and access standards. Hope this helps.
