Intel 233mmx,VX m/b with Award bios,10.3 IDE maxtor P/m, IDE DVD P/S,3.1 IDE seagate s/m,IDE CD ROM s/s, 64mb EDO ram. Win95B
Having enabled DMA on my DVD the restart resulted in horrible chattrering from the hard drives. Now the BIOS will not detect the hard drives and booting from a floppy and using FDISK fails to detect them. Is there any way I can get them back i.e low level format.

Thanks for the replies to date. I have installed another HD as p/m with the CD Rom and DVD on the secondary channel. This works OK so the m/b and IDE controllers are OK. The effected hard disks have been put into another machine and still cannot be seen by the BIOS so it does appear that enabling DMA has effected the disc structure.

Please provide more system info, i.e., type of machine, number of drives, interface type(s), device configuration (PM/PS; SM/SS).

Download and run the hard drive manufacturer's disc utilities to test, low-level format, and possibly reformat the drives.
If the manufacturer's program doesn't pick up the drive (see it) you are likely in the market /forum/frown.gif

Just wanted to add that if you lose your IDE controller on the board, the manufacturer's utility won't find them either.
This case sounds like the drives tho.

What you could try is removing the DVD drive (cable removal is only necessary) and see if the BIOS can then detect the HD's.
