I'm writing this post because it may shed some more light on some problems I amhaving with my DVD/RW drive ( NEC 2500A )

Where do i begin?? Well, first off I have been wondering about this device for quite some time as it seems to read slower than what i think is normal and also has problems reading updated material sometimes..AKA current windows and software, which earlier tonight I learned has to all be updated ( drivers and XP2 updates..ect.. ).

Some games for instance come up...load and play just fine... but every so often my system will freeze or hang and who knows what after inserting a disk.

Like some of you I have Daemon installed and use it to mount iso's for loading the material or playing..and since i get some from a good friend of mine...only about half of what he burns to a DVD iso comes up or plays.
The exact same disk and media goes right into his system with no problems...but for instance tonight I tried to load the disk in my DVD read/write player and it just froze and did really strange things to my system.

After learning about the need possibly for updated drivers.. I used the flash utitlity from the NEC site and did that..and still no change. I also used the disk DVD cleaner you buy at a computer store, which I thought might be the real problem. Again, no change.

Its funny at how when you go to the NEC site they seem adament about not being responsible for anything ..nor if anything works. Very up front about this for the updates. Makes you feel real positive about thier products...

Could i just have a bad device or something that is not up to par...or what??

Now.. for what i paid for this thing.. you can get a dual layer 16X burner with all the goodies for less than $70.00 and I paid like $93.00 for this back then.
For such a highly rated unit ,personally I think after using it over a period of time it stinks.

Should i just chuck it out the window and get a more updated model from another manufacturer or what?? The flash update was only about 1.06MB and probably didn't have anything of value anyways.

Computer maintenance nowadays is just getting to be so absurd. The windows OS and esp. the SP2 thing and constant updates make it hard to know what you need and don't need...even though its all spelled out and so many sites for info and downloads.

I have checked and rechecked evrything in my system and hardware panel and devices and all checks out ok.  ;)

Man - you have to be nuts to tell us that. We don't want to know what you use Daemon Tools for. It's like the US military gay policy - "Don't ask, don't tell". If you tell us, we are obliged to shut you down. You cannot legally "borrow" a friend's ISOs. That's piracy any way you cut it.

That being said, the DVD burner has absolutely nothing to do with ISOs and Daemon Tools. ISOs are played directly from the hard drive.

You have a system problem - not a drive issue. I know that you've had a lot of trouble with viruses and spyware. Perhaps it's just time for a clean reinstall of Windows.

whatever.... I am consciencious to know what i write and say.... I fully understand that.... but also i am a bit more honest and forthright than most also.

95% of all of you guys and do not tell me your not..perform someformof this whether it be piracy or what they call it now.

Don't worry...not another word.

To address the concern as I thought i would get SOME kind of answer to part of my questions... I do not have virues and or spyware. i run all the tools and best of by the way.

I found upon further review as stated that my DVD/RW/CD-RW device is one of the older versions they make now and that WXP SP2 supposedly has updates for IDE device drivers... and so I just may have a bad reader in my DVD device. Its quite possible. My friend has always said its strange my DVD player light stays green all the time instead of it blinking... As far as I can tell it has always worked that way.
The laser or reader is not reading the media..and that is what is happening most likely.

Re-installing windows again is not an option right now..although i could do that..but is it really worth it just for this problem. hard to say..unless the reader did not work for other media..which it DOES

never mind Bill... you can go back to whatever you were doing before LOL

Like I said, Daemon Tools does not use the drive. How can you explain that problem?

Just because you never know..I temp. uninstalled Daemon Tools. It also puts a bootfile log in with your startup..and personally i don't like that at all to be truthful.

I think I am going to get a new DVD burner anyways... this one I have has always read discs slower than even my Toshiba CD-R player... Like alot of computer hardware we all get sometimes you might just get a bad one and maybe this ones laser reader is bad or something.

I spotted a 16X DVD-RW /CD-RW dual layer Liteon one at NewEgg for just $40.00 and 98% of the reviews were five star.

My friends DVD player has a built in update tool that updates the drivers and he does llots and lots of burningand read with it.

After looking at the NEC home site.. and the driver updates and such they will not even guarantee anything they do... nor the dirver updates..,which is real odd, so its on with another maker.

I am constantly trying to keep my computer trouble free by using known tools and utilites that are highly recommended... Its highly possible that somewhere unknowest tome..something isamiss in the registry orsomewhere... but generally evrything seemsto be working good for the most part. No error type messages or spyware or virues..as i have a good virus program runningand a privacy service also.

Daemon Tools uses a virtual drive.. but the problem was when I put a iso disk in and try to load it by reading off my DVD player it just goes haywire... I mean the computer freezes ...and the liteonthe DVD player stays on... should it not be blinking like its trying to read something??

Thanks for taking the time to respond.... and forgive my flip nature. LOL
