aiieee! this really is a pain. i lost both of my IDE controllers! my parent controller is an Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE controller, which supposed to be working properly. but my primary and secondary IDE controllers have "hits" or exclamations by them. now i lost my cd roms, and my slave hdd. i've installed drivers till i'm blue in the face, i can't remove the "child" controller, and whenever i remove the "parent" controller, my whole sytem freezes. i turn it off, and i'm bak at the same thing. this isn't looking good at all. any ideas?

Well I just bought 2ide isa controllers last week for 10bux.
We had the same thing happen, but it didn't show up in windows. We couldn't get that far!
The board was old & non-flashable so we're replacing it.
The fact that yours boots and you get that far with it may indicate some hope to fix it!
Good luck!

If its a 440LX based motherboard then it is a problem with the inf files.
If you can enter windows let them stay with the sign besides it. Only download the patch from www.windrivers.com (http://www.windrivers.com) and read the text file that shows how to install them and the problem should disappear.
Another thing don't be tempted to use Intel's Bus Master Drivers... I have used them and they don't work pretty well and on another computer I had it made it take around 10-15min to boot from the 2-4 min it did before I installed those drivers.

STOP. Stop installing drivers that might be your first problem. You may have the incorrect drivers loading in an order that makes the wrong driver the default. "IF" that is the case then You may be able to recover with only some of your hair gone.
Dang I could type forever on this one but instead I will just point you to WWW.windowsglaore.com (http://WWW.windowsglaore.com) at follow their trouble shooting tips.
Good luck.
PS Start with the step by step configuration and then go from there.

You might want to check for any virus, also. /forum/smile.gif

Sounds like it was the NOIDE settings in the registry...

If it was working perfectly and then went bad for no aparent reason then it might well be a boot sector virus and not a driver that was at fault.
If you had a clean boot disk for that version of Winodws you might have gained a a temporary reprieve by doing this:
*write protect the boot disk and boot from it;
*fdisk /mbr and transfer the system files to the hard drive;
Looks like:
*A:\fdisk /mbr (press enter);
*A:\sys c: (press enter);
Of course the point is not relative since it now works, but you can either learn from it or pay $65 again in the future - which is okay by me since I would like to make a little extra cash now and again.
and here is another link to a place I know you can find a correct driver with an install program to keep handy for future emergencies: http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/index.htm
