Why when I defrag sometimes it works right thru, and other times it keeps restarting after 2-3%. It just keeps looping. How can I stop this and get it to run properly w/ Win98?

if you try running or opening or moving anything around while defrag is trying to work, defrag is gettin upset. if this isnt it, i couldnt tell ya /forum/smile.gif

Turn off any programs running in the background. I.E TaskScheduler, ScreenSavers and basically anything thats loaded automatically when you boot up Windows.

You also might want to run a 'Thorough' Scandisk before to make sure there are no errors.

And do it while the computer isn't being used.

actually, the absolute best thing you can do is boot the computer up in safe mode and run defrag. hit f-8 and hold it before windows boots and an option screen will appear allowing you to go into safe mode. this way only the necessary drivers and such will load. some programs running in the background when windows boots normally write to the hard drive, causing it's contents to change, and thus causing defrag to restart. should help.....good luck

All I do is ctrl-alt-delete. everything but Explorer & systray. turn off my power management. then use defrag

use norton speeddisk !
it locks the disk and moves the swapfile
and is faster !!!!!

Yup sounds like you have rc-5 or virus checker running in the background, or you are doing something else while it is defragging, like typing a letter, sorting out your files in Explorer, whatever.
Either kill everything but Systray and Explorer in the Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) or go to Start->Run and type msconfig<ENTER>. There should be a tab there called startup or autostart or similar, with little checkboxes. Click off everything you are sure you don't need, then reboot. Remeber to recheck the stuff in msconfig if you want it back.

i am a Mijenix Fix it Utilities fan. I have all of the big three (Norton, McAfee and Mijenix) and the Mijenix is the fastest and I found that (by mistake b/c i usually use the same method MikeL described) that you can have a bunch of stuff running in the background and it doesn't restart the defrag.
