I want to extend my rear surrond sound speakers to the back of my room, about 40 feet on each of em. the speakers plug into the back of the subwhoofer through an rca port, I think is what its called. when I looked around all I could find was a extension cable that was six feet long and cost 6 bucks...not im not gonna buy 10 of these. does anyone know of a place that sells a lot longer cords? pleeease help.

Is it a 2 wire cord? If so you could cut and add however long you need. Just make sure you solder the connections then use heat shrink tubing over the soldered connections.

ok..the reason I didnt mention this was because the genuis at the store said it wasnt possible, the only answer was to buy his 20 extension cords...which to him makes perfect sense...so, i got buy some steroa wire (what gauge) cut the original cord, add in about 30 feet, and solder the connector back on? its not just two wires that are clamped in, its an actual stereo jack type connector. I wish I could be clearer.

This is what you should do. The longest RCA cables (yes thats what they are called) are 12ft. that I have seen. you could but some of them or a cheaper solution would be to buy some normal stereo cord (the cord that goes from a reciever or boom box to the speakers, it doesnt have RCA jacks on it). You can get these in huge/long amounts at radio shack for pretty cheap prices. Splice off the RCA jacks that will be hooked up to each wire (you will need 2 stereo speaker wires, 1 for each RCA cord). When you splice the RCA cord there will be 2 cords in there, hook the small one up to neg. and the big one up to positive, do this on both sides. You may have to run both of the small ones on 1 speaker wire, just make sure the wires are in sync, positive on one wire is same as positive on the other wire, etc... You might be better off buying the 12ft. RCA cables if you are looking for quality. NOTE : If you do buy the RCA instead, make sure you get male/female/male/female so you can conn. them to each other. Each splice in a wire reduces quality, as well as every 2ft. in the wire by a small amount after 10ft. (this can be further depending on the source).
technical terms : The wire with the
red/white (sometimes black instead of white, rarely youll see green to)conn. are called RCA/stereo wires (also monoraul if its only one RCA cable on it so it would only be one red or black RCA connector one each end).
RCA jack : jack you plug the RCA connector into.
splice : cut wire (this allows you to twist together another wire to make a connection)
ohh yea if you do any splicing, then make sure you at least use electrical tape around the splice, or you can goto Home Depot/Lowe's and ask them for wire nuts, these are better than electrical tape and are real cheap. They screw into the splice connecting the 2 wires and are encased in plastic for protection.
Tell the "genius" about that other option |)

NavyDood gave you the best option if you know how to solder.
The main reason what you want to do is discouraged is that you will have some losses going that far. You may not hear the rear channels that far from you unless you have some kind of booster for the rear channels.
Bigger wire gauge is better for this sort of project.
Good luck!
