What should you have in the config.sys file to make the puter perform it's best and fastest.

Thanks.

The best config.sys is none at all. Same with autoexec.bat. These are DOS holdovers, and are not needed unless you are running DOS programs or have ancient hardware that requires loading old real mode drivers. My rule of thumb is that any Win98 computer that cannot run without them is not properly or optimally configured.

Actually, why don't you just go to start, then run, then type in msconfig. When it opens, just click on selective startup, and make sure the autoexec.bat and config.sys options are unchecked.

That-a-way, fi you run into problems, you can start in safe mode, start, run, msconfig, and check the boxes to start using them again.

This way, you're not burning any bridges behind you, huh?

Good luck in all...

Yes, and if you are running Win95 you can just create a backup *.txt file of CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT before you delete them, and fix it in safe mode with edit or sysedit if you run into problems.

For some reason W95 always puts the DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS line back in there every time I blank the config.sys file.

If you play any DOS mode games you might run into a problem with needing your sound card & CDROM; if so, install the DOS level drivers, and then copy the autoexec.bat file to the "dosstart.bat" file in Windows, once that is done you can probably just delete the autoexec.bat file and just leave the config.sys file alone.

So are you saying that I can just go in and delete my autoexec and comfig.sys????? Wow! I have no dos programs (except possibly? Norton Ghost and Patition Commander) and no old hardware.
