Hi. I've installed Win98se and my programs, and I'm up and running. However, every once in awhile I get the message: "Put Win98 CD in CD-ROM." As we all have come to realize, this is a pain. Obviously I forgot to load the entire Win98 when I first set up. Is it too late to copy all Win98 files to HD?
Thx
You want to copy all the cab files into a directory in the hd. and when the puter asks for the cd, just put in the path to the cab files. Just go into the windows explorer and go into the win98 dir on the cd rom and select all the Cabinet Files, go up to the view menu and make sure you select details. Then hold down the Ctrl key and click on all the Cabinet files and then copy them into the directory you want to store them in.

Even better, copy all the Win98 folder .cab files to a folder on your hard drive named "whatever". Start, Run, type in regedit, click beside HKEY Local Machine, click beside Software, click beside Microsoft, click beside Windows, click..Current Version, click to open Setup.
Now, scroll down the right side until you see Source Path. Right click on the corresponding entry and modify to correspond to the folder where you copied the cab files, ie Source Path=C:\"whatever"\

You beat me to it, Underclocked...I was going to tell him the same thing, but in the time it took me to find the right Registry key, u had already posted it!
One thing I would suggest, though, is to back up the registry before editing it... I've found that out the hard way a few more times then I want to remember (never select User-Level access if your computer isn't hooked up to a NT server!!). This will save frustration if you accidentally change another registry setting!

Thanks for advice. HOWEVER after creating a folder and copying the *.cab files to it, I looked in WinExplorer and all the cabs were WinZip files! That isn't right, is it?
Depending on the unzip program you have. Some uzippers that i have seen do make and unzip cab files. Are they listed as *.cab? if so then this is right
Don't worry bout it

Winzip 7 opens cabs so that is cool.

Thanks. Looking at the files through WinExplorer they are labeled "WinZip" files. From DOS prompt, they are *.CAB files. If my computer searches for one of these files, I suppose I direct to C:\"file containing win98." Interesting, I created a folder at the root directory, and the files look different (Win/zip vs. *.CAB) depending from where I look at them: "C" prompt vs. Windows Explorer...
Any comments?
Thx for your time.

Did you happen to install 98Plus! on your pc?
If so, you may installed the compressed files tools which make such changes.
Check out this thread. I had the same problem with my cab files. The fix is at the bottom of the thread. Hope it helps ya.

Mr. Ed:
Tres cool! Mind-blowing to change that reg default and, presto! have WinZip turn into regular folders. Thx for passing on the tip.
