My USRobotics 56k Fax internal is starting to die on me. Can anyone suggest a good ISA replacement or PCI modem that's NOT a winmodem?

yeah, another usr modem. /forum/smile.gif wouldn't buy anything else after hassles with small name brands.

of course, you can always go for the oem version and save some bucks. got mine for about $75 that way.

I like (and use) the Zoom line. Not only is it cheaper, but it is similar in reliability w/ USR and has complete voice support. The isa is about 60-80. i use the external and have been very pleased. it has been ranked by PC mags as one of the top 5.

PS- all PCI modems are "winmodems". They are aka HSP or HCP modems and are software driven and rely on your processor to do alot of the work that an ISA or external modem will do.

I like my diamond supra express. Lifetime warranty and connects faster than my usr ever did. I bought a usr v90 bells and whistles modem when they first came out and it died on me, it was replacing a 33.6 usr that died. I have had no probs with the diamond (it is isa) and it works great in linux to. I will never again buy usr.

actually, no, aopen makes a pci modem that has a hardware controller. the last time i tried though (in the middle of the 56K "standard" wars), their drivers weren't up to snuff. could be okay now though, just make sure you can return it.

oh, forgot to mention i meant a isa hardware controlled usr modem.

Not all PCI modems are winmodems!!!
Actiontech and GVC both make PCI hard modems based on a Rockwell (Connexant) chipset.

Brian,

If you are running Win98 do a USB external.

Makes life a lot easier.

I run a ModemBlaster.

Save a slot & do USB /forum/wink.gif

Yeah, I thought about that. I was at the mall during my lunch hour and I noticed they had a Diamond Supra Express (USB - external) at the local EB. I would prefer to stick to internals just to keep as much of my system self-contained as possible, but I have to admit there are alot of advantages to having an external. Saving a slot is something I'm not too concerned about. I have a new P3B-F so I've got plenty of slots to spare /forum/wink.gif. Although, I like the USR's, I think they're alittle too pricey compared to some of the others which provide the same performance. I do know I definitely don't want a pure software modem (unless it happens to be a REALLY, REALLY good one and even then, I need some convincing). I know that some of the newer PCI modems use their own built-in hardware, but these are very hard to find around here.

Sorry for the somewhat dated PCI modem info. /forum/smile.gif

Brian,

Go external The blinky flashy lites are worth the non-effort.

It lets you know what is happening when you thought you weren't doing anything.

Last time I checked the Diamond online store clearance section had the SupraExpress externals for 59.xx
Of course, it might be overnite or 3 years before you get it. /forum/wink.gif
