Going to buy a new hard drive today…but not sure what type. Performnace wise….I was thinking about a 74Gb WD Raptor…but there fairly expensive. For near £50 less I can buy a 250Gb Sata II WD drive with a 16Mb buffer size. How does the 16Mb buffer size on the 250Gb drive increase the performance? Is there much difference between this and the Raptor?

Cheers guys :t

The raptor is still better, but size/performance wise the 16mb cache drive is a better buy. The Maxtor DM10s are also 16MB cache.

compare the drives at www.storagereview.com

Thats a good site...I read over later.

Midknyte...would I notice a major difference in performance with the Raptor over my currently installed 160G 8Mb WD SATA?

I plan to use the 160Gb now for file storage only. What do you think would be a good way to go?

I have a 74G raptor and it is very fast. I can definitely tell the difference going from a 7200/8mb drive. The DM10s are very fast also, but the raptors are "snappier" to me. for all out performance, the raptors are the way to go, but you only get 74G max. if you don't care about size, then get the raptor. if you want size and performance, the DM10s are the good.

they are half the price....for storage 3 times the size...but nearly as fast??? Hard decision

MaxlineIII and diamondmax 10s are basically the same thing. read the review on storagereview.

I have both Raptor and 16Mb cache drives (both sata)

a 300+ GB with 16 mb cache works quite **** good now in days, the speed might not be as fast as the Raptor, but it sure beats the **** out of the old 7200 and 5400 drives.

I'm so used to all these new HDD speeds now in days, that i can't no longer touch a Latop, it's like Hellish slow for me :p

I use 1 Raptor for the OS
and the 2nd Raptor for the Games i play most often

the other drives 300+ 16 mb are good for storage and Games you don't play so often

what is the stripe size your brother is using for is RAID? I have 2 Raptors in a RAID 0 with a 32k Stripe and I can not see a big difference in game loading times.

It's all about Price, capcity and then speed, in that order as far as im concerned.

You cant go wrong with the 250GB Maxtor DM10, i've got one myself, oodles of storage at a great price. plus while it's not the quickest HDD going, to be fair, it's no snail in performance terms
