I have the following hardware in my computer:
FIC 2013 motherboard (latest rev. 2.0?)
AMD-k6/2 400 mhz CPU
64 mb generic pc100 sdram
6.4 gb maxtor eide hard drive
SB awe64 sound card
ati xpert98 video card
100 mb int. ZIP drive
Sony superstation tape backup

The system will freeze, everything will just lock up & you have to hit reset to reboot.
It doesn't seem to be heat, because I've had it happen about 30 minutes after first turning on for the day, I'll reboot & it'll be fine for 3-4 hours with no problems. Seems to be totally at random. I've had it happen with all different applications running & with no applications running. It's driving me nuts & I need to figure this out. Seems to me that it's got to be hardware, but the only thing I would guess would be the memory. But, I've used the same memory in other systems with no problems. So, I'm clueless!! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!!

Chances are that it is the mem. If the NS speed is lower than 10ns a lot of "Genereic" memory gets very unstable and the random stuff definately sounds like the memory. I would almost bet that the other machines were sloer than 400 mhz.

I had the same problem with some 8ns generic mem.

GOOD LUCK.

Actually, the other systems are slower, mostly k6-350's, but my main one is a k6/2 450 and is very stable with 128mb generic.
But I'm leaning toward changing the memory. Would it be "bad" memory (that I would exchange under warranty) or should the brand of memory be changed?

Some computer stores will have something to test your ram with, try pulling them out and taking it to one to see if that's the problem. Also, I know you said it "appears to be random", but do you think the problem can be duplicated, ie. is it a particular program that it happens in? Do you have a lot of programs running at the same time? Win98, or Win95?

Thanks for the input DILLBERT & MrED.
The problem seems to be totally ramdom. It does not seem to be any particular program or when I am doing anything. It has happened when nothing was running & just sitting at the main desktop screen (WIN98). I'm going to switch the memory with a similar system (same motherboard, video, AMD cpu, etc.) and see if the locking up switches computers, then I'll know for sure.
Thanks again!!
