Due to a recent hard drive failure I am upgrading my system. I have opted to get a sata hd. Now, the old hard drive is under warranty so when I get it back I was wondering if I should stick it in my system as an extra hard drive. But would this effect the performance of the Sata drive, I cant see why as it connects to a different connection on the mobo.

no, they are independent of each other.

Just be sure to have the bios set to boot from Sata.

Yes I was wondering if I could install windows from fresh with just a SATA drive in the system. If I get any problems I will put up a sos note on the forum.

I have a question that I believe is on topic. If I were to insatll a SATA drive, would it be possible to Ghost my existing drive (clone) to it and be able to use the SATA drive to boot up? My existing Maxtor ATA drive is getting a little long in the tooth. Plus I'd like to try RAID in the near future.

you would have to do a repair install since the controller would change, but it is possible.

The drive is recognized ok but it still boots from the ATA drive. If I unplug the ATA it won't boot from the SATA  I've got the bios set up correctly, could the repair not have taken? I'm thinking I'll just wipe the drive and do a fresh instal.

you have to clone the PATA to the SATA, then do a repair install on the SATA using the f6 option to add the SATA drivers.

Yup, that is what I did. I'll go ahead and wipe the SATA drive and try again. My hope is to eventually have two 10,000 rpm SATA drives striping in raid O, and a larger PATA drive for my weekly backup :D
