I did a fresh windows 95 C installation on my newish (3 month old) computer. I then installed the motherboard patch that is required for USB support IDE drivers AGP etc.
Now when i put this harddisk back into my old computer (3 years old), it detects all the different devices and when it finds the hard disk controller "Intel 82371SB PCI bus master IDE controller" it comes up with the screen saying to insert disk or cdrom that came with the hardware. when i click next it searches the floppy drive and then when it tries to search in the windows drivers something called "msgsrv32.exe" crashes 3 times then the system hangs. Has anyone else seen this before? can anyone help me out here? Thanx.

Have you tried just runnng the Setup off of the MB driver disk instead of letting windows try to find the files? Just cancel out when WIN wants to find the files and then run the setup. Btw, what type of MB do you have?

This isn't unusual. Windows is trying to load two different sets of system resources. You installed it in one machine so it has that hardware set up & drivers installed. Then you moved the drive.

Now when i put this harddisk back into my old computer...

Windows is attempting to load a second, different set of motherboard resources, but the first set is still there. Usually see this when MB is changed without reformatting the drive.

Can be fixed w/o format, but frankly in this case the easiest & quickest way is to just wipe it & reload, since this is a fresh install anyway. Other way takes longer & more hassle, but worth it if lots of apps are already installed.

Well if I understand this correctly, just install the correct bus mastering drivers for the old motherboard, correct?

Nathan:
Just went through a week of the same stuff. Copying over the driver file will only work if it is the same chipset version and all. Windows 95 seems at least for me a very poor bussmaster driver. Best bet is to clean the drive and start over. I put in a bunch of hours trying to do what you want to do and believe me it is not worth it.

OK guys,
sorry for not giving you enough background info - i was in a hurry. I used to have this harddrive set up and i could swap it between computers - no problems. The mboard in the old computer does not need extra drivers it uses win95 drivers. The new one is a DFI P2XBL (BX). I have seen this msgsrv32.exe thing before and i am convinced it is a bug in windows.
Since my last post i have found out that I can swap this harddisk between computers if i run the motherboard utility before swapping. This driver resets all the motherboard drivers and lets windows re-detect them.

Note to BLEEP - I was hoping i could have the drive set up so i could swap it whenever i want.

Note to SUSAN - if i try to cancel the detectiion it crashes anyway, then hangs.

Thanks for the replies every1.

You are swapping this hard drive between two different computers? And you are expecting it to run right? Well, I don't know how it say this...but...

I agree. I was figuring neil_mck was leaving this newly installed hard drive in his old system to stay. Henceforth the reason for installing the IDE stuff pertaining to the old motherboard. That driver, that's mentioned, is available at the Intel site for download.
