he Church of England's first black archbishop has been posted racist letters and human excrement.
Newly-appointed Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu told a radio station about the hate mail people have sent to him.
The 56-year-old is set to be enthroned at York Minster next month.
He told BBC Radio 4: "I don't want to have those sorts of things and say 'Why do people do this?'
"I don't know who they are. They don't tell you.
"In the end, when I get these letters, I actually pray for the people who have written them."

Dr Sentamu is the only black archbishop in the church's 500-year history.
He will be the 97th to take the York position, which is second-highest after Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion.
Dr Sentamu had been bishop of Birmingham since 2002.
He campaigns against racism and gun crime and recently led demonstrations against the Iraq war.
