I have a Seagate Cheetah 9.1GB Ultra Wide SCSI drive (19101W), that died on me today. I believe that the drive itself is fine, but the onboard electronics/controller board is fried. Does anyone know of a place that might sell the board separately, or does anyone have a 19101W that they want to part with?

I really just need a drive temporarily so I can take the good controller board off of it, put it on my drive, copy my data off of it, and put the good board back on the other drive, but I wouldn't want to risk it with someone's drive containing data.

I know, I should have had a backup, and I did have part of it backed up, but of course, not all.

How old is the drive? Have you asked Seagate to do it...? If its still under warranty...
Maybe. 1-800-SEAGATE or 405-936-1234 or DiscSupport@Seagate.com.

I bought it in late 1997. I don't know if it's under warranty, but my thinking is that if I send it off to Seagate, I'll never see the data again. I have more hard drives than I know what to do with, so I'm not too concerned about the drive itself, I just need the data from it, somehow.. I know I can use a professional service like Data Recovery Labs, but they'll charge AT LEAST $1,000 to do it.

Maybe if you sent it to them as a test of their services to be published as an article on Sysopt, they'd do it gratis!
Or maybe offer them ad space in return.

For that matter, Seagate should fall all over themselves to keep YOU happy! At the very least they should send you another, identical drive in advance so you can swap the board

Scott, you've earned these kind of perks here, throw some weight around!

It's still under warranty. At least call. I've had good experiences with them.

I heard more like $3,000. They know we'll pay if we really need the data.

That drive shouldn't be too difficult to find. If the data is worth several hundred dollars to you, track one of the drives down and rip the controller out.
