Can any one tell me how to get a pb to run without their **** - REformat-fdisk etc.
Only wants to reformat with their restore disks and then it doesnt want to restore .
I would love to be able to format and do a clean install of 98 but no matter what I try have not been able to .

Not sure why it isn't allowing you to load win 98? I have had 2 packard bells and done away with there **** and formatted and installed win 98 without any problems?
Had a packard bell 1010 and a packard bell "pack-mate" and installed windows 98 cleanly.

Most of those "restore" disks will only allow full installation of everything it came with & set up their way.
You're going to need a real W9x CD. /forum/frown.gif

You might try a low-level format on the hard drive, then format and install from a full 98.

Low Level Formats spell death for some HD's, I had an old 170meg that I killed with it, lol. Of course just last weekend it looked like my Grandmas 6.4igg WD was gone, dead, burnt out, so I figured what the heck, ill LLF it, it worked like a charm and the drive runs great, heh, But i dont think thats his problem, its his CD's that are his problem, probably.

Like Ed_S says, you need a real WIN disk.
Before hand do the FDisk and reformat.

I have formated at least 5or6 times but each
time i get to the end of installing either 98 or 95 I get (windows protection error) you must restart computer but it just goes around in a circle . Once in awhile it lets me in to safe mode but I cannot find any problems in device manager or otherwise . Thanks for all the suggestions but so far nothings works .

Susan is right, you will need a real copy of win98. You will also need a win98 startup disk along with a CD driver disk. I know of one person that was able to copy just the win98 from the PB cd but you need a cd copier. From there you should be able to load it without the PB junk.
