Sharpy,

If you are running Win95 you need to install the AMD Win95 patch. (win95 has a timing issue with the AMD 300mhz+ chips). as for the VMM errors those are "virtual memory manager" problems. make sure that under the performance tab in the system propertys you let Windows manange your memory. (some people prefer to set this manually but for MOST people it is best left to the OS to adjust this itself).

Also just double check your jumper settings for the AMD chip. I am not familar with the Skywell MOBO. the 450 chip uses 2.4V stock and runs at 4.5 x 100mhz. (is the Skywell a truely 100mhz compliant board? if not try setting the jumpers for 4.5 x 95mhz if avaliable)

Let us know what you have tried and what ends up working for you /forum/biggrin.gif

Help!
System:
I've just upgrade my cyrix 266 to a K6-2 450 on a Skywell J-542b motherboard.
I've also installed an ATI Rage IIc AGP video card & Creative Labs PCI 128 sound card.
I also have 12MB Voodoo 2, 3.2 Gig HD, 64MB ram, Rockwell modem.

Problem.
When i boot i get "Windows protection error, please restart your computer."
This happens 3 out of 5 times i boot.
When its actualy running my system crashes displaying some **** about VMM and pointers?

If anyone has any advice i would be most gratefull.

Here's hoping.

I`m using win98 4.10.98 and i havn`t touched the memory management but it`s 6:30 in the morning so i`ll check the jumper settings in the morning and let you know.

Thanks for the help.

p.s. how do you get the yellow smileys? :-)

Yes the Mboard is 100Mhz it uses Ali Aladdin-V chipset.
I checked the motherboard manual and it agrees it should be 2.4v. I then checked the jumper setting`s and found it set at 2.2v, I changed it to 2.4v and restarted the computer but while typing my reply the keyboard and mouse locked up and i couldn`t reset or switch it off.
After removing the heat sink and checking the chip it says core voltage 2.2v Oops!
Now i`m back to 2.2v and back to square 1.

Anymore help is welcome.

Well after changing the jumper setting`s back i`ve had the beast running all day and no problems, maybe heat because a havn`t put the case back on yet?

Thanks again Mntsnow.

Yep....Got to luv'm....well it does sound like you might be having a touch of heat. (but thats nice you have the NEWEST of the 450 chips! so now there is 2.2v and 2.4v chips avaliable) Lower is nicer! you might try inceasing the air flow over your chipa nd heatsink.

as for the smiley's /forum/biggrin.gif
