Digital photos vanished but not deleted!

Help, one day my photos wre all in tact, the next day they were all gone. I had not downloaded anything or removed hardware or software....every single photo just vanished.
I have tied restoring to an earlier date when I know the pics were there.. with no success. I have searched all hidden files and checked deleted trash with no success.
Does anyone have a clue where these sneaky little pc's could have hidden them?

I bet you viewed them on the media you plugged into the computer and neglected to save them to disk.

they were on my hard drive in "my pictures" last time I saw them. I had only just loaded them off my digital camera after returning from holiday. Most of the older pics were backed up on disk, but the more recent ones had not ben backed up yet.
I usually save a job lot onto disk at once.
