Just messed up this drive and can't seem to fix it.
This is a Seagate U8 13 gig hdd that has been working just fine till last night. What happened is I was unplugging a power converter from the strip and bumped the on/off switch just enough for the computer to shut down. After that it would only start in safe mode.
Ran thorough scandisk and that was fine. Ran sys file checker and found setup.exe missing files.
Well I was going to reformat anyways so I could transfer another drive to it. Now after reformatting a number of times and using Data lifegaurd to do the transfer which failed, then ghost, which also failed, I can't get this drive to fdisk with a new partion and it doesn't show up in My Computer. Though when I use Seagate Seatools it finds the drive correctly, and has run most of the online tests Ok.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

download the bootable seatools and run a full diagnostic. better yet, get UBCD which already has seatools plus a bunch of other useful stuff.
Tech Tools (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=173743)

if it passes, then try using "zap" on the drive. then see if you can partition/format.

Thanks midnyte,
Downloaded UBCD from Majorgeeks site but now I can't find it! When I downloaded it I chose open and not save which is what I normally do.

you need to download the .iso and burn the image to a cd.

Thanks, now have the drive recovered but still can't get it to fully copy from the other drive.

But I guess that should be a new thread! So watch please!

did you "zap" the drive? see tech tools for that.

did you try another software besides WD DLG?

Actually just made a new boot disk from Win98 and it worked to reformat anf fdisk.
But I will go back when I have time and redownload UBCD. It took almost an hour to do it last night and that's with using a cable modem.

Also tried Norton Ghost 2003 that was on a App. pack CD for a Biostar board. After that attempt it wouldn't even boot to a prompt.

where are you getting the UBCD from? use the link in tech tools.

mirror site @ Majorgeeks, it was an .exe file.
