I have a pc-chips motherboard with an ancient version of AMIBIOS 7/15/95 and I was wondering if there is a place to get a more updated bios? if so, specifically how do i update the bios correctly?? One of my friends updated his BIOS and the whole system came crashing down. I want to avoid this so if anyone could give me some instructions that would be greatly appreciated...

7-15-95. I have the same date on my Pc Chips bios. This is what I think is up with that. The bios CHIP was made on that date or soemthing to that effect. However, the actual info in the bios is much more recent. My bios, in the string shows 072898 or something about that. After checking the Pc Chips site, 07-28-98 is that last bios released. Now, what I've noticed is that the 7-15-95 chips are working on the older non graphic version of the Amibios. This doesn't seem to make any difference as all of the currrent, up to date options are in there. Including CPU speed selection and all those goodies. Check your bios string. Copy down all the numbers, then go to the site, check the date of the last revision. If you find numbers that match some of the numbers in the bios, then your bios should be up to date. Depending on when you bought your board, you may see a 97, 98, or 99 somewhere in the string. That would be the year, obviously. So, this really means that that 7-15-95 date should be pretty much ignored. Also, if you pop the top and look at the bios chip you should prolly see what's on mine, 1995. Anyway, check that out and see what you come up with.

By the way, my board iis an M715. Strangely enough, the board was listed as an Amptron on Pricewatch and then listed as a Eurone on the site I bought it from. When I got it, everything including the CD that came with the board points towards it being directly from PcChips and not from Amptron or Eurone who sell/make/whatever PcChips boards. And since the bios has M715 in the string, that solves that for me.

thanks much...
i checked the bios listings here on sysopt and my board appears to be a hsing tech board, but I have heard that pc-chips makes lots of boards thru many different names so either way I have a motherboard I have never heard of.
It may be a more current bios than I thought, but i was changing something in the bios related to the cpu and lo and behold it set the fsb to 66 with a multiplier of 5 along with the processor speed of 166 mhz ( have 450 k6)...so as you might imagine this confused the hell out of the processor and before I knew the temp of the core was 120 F.....!!! I had to go back and reenter this several times before the processor got the message and stayed cool. So i dont think much of my bios.....

Sounds like a tempermental Bios to me. After hearing lots of negative things about PcChips and their subsidiaries, I have to admit that this M715 is one solid board. The only problem was that it disliked my old 72 pin FPM memory chips. 2 16 meg and 2 4 meg chips from my previous Soyo 5VC board. This was actually a blessing as I purchased 2 32 meg PC100 Dimms and definately improved EVERYTHING with those super speedy chips!(PNY memory chips) Installation was a snap. The cd that came with the board actually had a very cool virus scanning program on it and since I don't have one, that was a major plus. And on top of that, every program that refused to run or ran with problems on my previous Soyo 5VC/AMD K5-166 run like a charm on this board. Matter of fact, EVERYTHING runs on this board/Celeron 400. For 124 bucks, I couldn't be happier. Hopefully, yours will settle down and behave from now on.
