my problem is that com2 in NT has disappeared
after reinstalling NT recently my com2 is gone, and when I try to add com2 I get this error message

"While validating that COM2 was really a serial port, the contents of the divisor latch register was identical to the interrupt enable and the receive registers. The device is assumed not to be a serial port and will be deleted."

I have a dual boot and com2 in 98 works fine
I have tried sp5 and still no luck
I received an article from TechNet, unfortunately it didn't help, and basically says that the com port is not physically there, which can't be cos before I reinstalled NT it was there and working fine.

any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

It may be that you need a registry hack for NT to work on your motherboard and recognize the com port.

Also, might be that you need to upgrade the motherboard BIOS for NT which it may or may not support. Have you surfed to the motherboard manufacturer's website to check their files and possibly pick up a BIOS update file?

Check your Bios very carfully. Under integrated peripheral, set both onboard com ports to fixed setting. Don't use Auto. What are you trying to use the com port for? NT can be pretty quarky about com ports but every problem I ever had was solved in the bios. Not in NT.
