Hello:
I just hooked up dsl service, and it is so slow, I'm suffocating, literally...
Downloading a file now; it is coming in at 4.8k/sec...not much better than my old, old 33.6kbps modem...I was expecting speeds like 20, 30, or 40 k/sec...
Is this all I can expect from dsl? If so, it is sad, indeed...
does it go that slow on all downloads, or just that particular one? If it is that slow on everything I would be doing some serious griping to your isp, but if it is only on that one download, the server could just be slow.

One thing you have to keep in mind: you are at the mercy of the equipment that you are downloading FROM. If you are running a 400Kbps satellite receiver or cable modem & you're downloading a file from JoeShmo.com, who is only running a 28.8 modem, then you only get 28.8 service. The thing is, when you log onto a site with equipment equaling yours, you'll blaze like no standard modem ever could! /forum/wink.gif

What site is so slow? All of them? Did you try a really good sit, say like symantec or somwething? Try this page to see what your throughput actually is.

sorry, but it's been soo long since I posted a url, I forgot how to leave it as a link. Just copy and paste in you address box in browser.
Also, with a cable modem, make sure that the MAIN cable line comes to ONE splitter. One side goes to the cable modem, the other can go to another splitter for however many tv's you have, okay? This is very important! You need the main cable to go to the modem, or your signal will be lower.
Also, make sure the first splitter is a good, bi-directional one. Ask your cable company (isp), if they won't GIVE you one, go to radio shack.
Try that, and see if it helps. Should! Let me know how it goes.
Also, you can go to start, settings, control panel, internet options, connections, lan settings, automatically detect, and okay. Your windoze may not be setup to work with a lan (cable modem) optimally.
E-mail me and let me know how it goes, okay?
Good Luck In All...

Hello again:
Thanks all for your informative and quick replies. Those test pages are cool...my performance falls between ISDN and ISDN2...
Still, for practicality, I'm still disappointed. Pages take a long time to load, downloads are not very fast.
I tried playing Kingpin online, and with my 33.6, I typically got ping times ranging between 200 and 350; with my new dsl, I'm now in the 90-100 category. (I'm surprised, because having low ping is no substitute for skill /forum/smile.gif)
I'm sure I must have neglected some settings somewhere, somehow...anyone?
I'm getting file download speeds ranging between 0.7k/sec to 4.0k/sec...quite pathetic for $40 a month...

You are also at the mercy of your OWN ISP. They may be having some things replaced/problems right now. DSL performance varies with every ISP and even every phone line. Plus how you are routed through all the phone lines etc... theres so many things that could cause you to lagg, when your next door neighboor gets 40k you get 30k, it varies like crazy. I can testify that ADSL ROX! for the most part. My friend has a 1.5mbd/l-256k u/l and ive seen him d/l a file at 200k/sec! He doesnt really have an average, it goes imbetween 4k-200k but most of the time he at LEAST gets 20k-30k. One thing you could try is switching phone jacks/as well as the phone cord, doubt itll help but worth the try. Also call your ISP and see if they know of any current things they are doing that could cause problems, or if they know of any prob's they are trying to fix. Tell them your transfer rate and they should be able to hook up to your ip and ping you with some digital software and see how bad you are lagging and maybe be able to trace the route of witch is causing it.

Grandslammer, your info was very informative and helpful for cable modem users, but he is using dsl, which is through the phone lines.

Hello:
Okay, I just had an experience. I was downloading an MP3; it started at 2.0k/sec, then accelerated to 10k/s, then continued to pick up speed up to 25k/sec and leveled off there to the end...not too bad...
But out of my time spent surfing, where I lose the most time is waiting for pages to load. At my work, I'm not sure what kind of connection we have (I work in a 50 storey building) probably T1...but pages rarely take more than a few seconds to load, maybe 5 sec for a big page...I was hoping for this kind of performance...am I hoping too much?

Well if it is a T1 line then you should be getting up to 200kbps. You won't get near that performance out of a DSL. You can get that out of a cable connection for the same price (about 40-50/ month with T line-like speed) If you don't have a long term contract or alot of money tied up in your DSL go with cable. In my area it is 40/ month with the $100 installation waived. The technology isn't perfect yet but it should be a lot faster than DSL at the same price.

thanx bigslammer
i tested my modem and it seems to be fine. I was wondering myself why I was getting 2.2k/sec download time with my 56k and that shows that my modem is not too bad....

so, are you actually connecting through your modem, or a nic?
You can go to your device manager, then double click on modem, then click on the modem tab, then select 115200 for your max speed. But DO NOT select connect only at this speed...
If you're connecting with modem, the value you have in that field may be too low. ???
But, I thought you connected with a nic, so maybe I was off base earlier, huh?
I pay 39 a month (plus 10 for the cable modem rental) but, I can download at an average of 35 - 40k/sec. I have seen up to 60 k/sec, but that is definately the exception rather than the rule...
Good luck in all..
Mike P.
Your throughput 102830 cps
Typical 64K ISDN 7500 cps
Estimated 128K 15000 cps
Is that good? Just wondering...

Andrew. It should do better than 25K.
If you had previously tweaked, your MSS, MTU and other related settings for the 33.6K modem with iSpeed (or similar soft) or manually, undo those changes and revert to Windows default settings. DSL is basically a network connection and benefits from the larger optimized values Windows defaults to. Downloads should pick-up considerably.
Get your mp3s from www.napster.com (http://www.napster.com)

Hello:
Exactly, BleedingEdge; you are right...I was using ispeed with my 33.6...I'll have to take your advice when I get home tonight; it was late last night when I was setting up last night and just didn't think of it...
I'll keep you all up to date...thanks again BL...
Part of the issue with your DSL connection is how far away from the telecommunication central office you are.
Who sold you the connection? - DSL's connect multiple users to a cable going out to a certain termination length. Kinda like a scsi cable that's too long and you can't get anything to work on the last connector. If you're towards the end of the feed, you'll get slow performance.

That's true, Axel; but I just want to make sure everything is okay on my end before I go bothering the provider...
