I just reinstalled XP on my daughters PC and have a situation I've not encountered before. Nowhere did it ask me to set up user accounts so now the only login is via Administrator with the password. When I try to set up a new account I give it my daughter's name and the next screen says I must first set up an Administrator account - which is already there. So, I tried using the name Administrator and it says that account is already active.

How do I get out of this?

Thanks

You didn't give your daughter admin rights in her account or you renamed the admin account to your daughters' name.

You might want to do a repair install to redo it and clean up any errors.

Ok, I can try that, but just to make sure I understand what is going on here: When I start XP I do not get any list of users, it just says administrator and then has me put in the password. I would have thought that since I am logged in as administrator I could set up new accounts, but it says I have to swt up an administrator account first, and won't let me. It sounds like I am stuck in a circular arguement with the machine.

If I go through the restore process I guess I will have to reinstall any XP updates, right?

Sterling, I finally got it to work. After installing SP2 I tried again and this time it asked me if I wanted the account to be adminiostrator or limited, never saw that before, so I make her the admin. Then I could create an account for me. Looks liek I am out of trouble.

Thanks.
