Hey guys and gals, Just got thru building another computer with all my left over parts and have run into a frustrating problem. When I do a "reboot" the system will hang during the splash screen and it locks up so tight that I have to do a manual reset. Then I have to have it go thru a "safe mode" and then power completely down from there before I can get it to boot into windows again.. If the machine gets completely shutdown when it was last used it will boot up just fine the next time it is turned on. There is no conficts in the device manager, I have the newest drivers for all of the cards. (PCI video, sound, scsi and NIC) Any Ideas of what to look for?

My first guess would be a registry problem. Have you tried reinstalling Windows? My second guess would be a conflict that device manager isn't recognizing. Try disabling some things and go from there. Is it hanging on the shut down splash screen, or the start up one? From what I understand, if it's the shut down screen, it's drivers not wanting to unload.

Anyone else want to help out here? Did I miss something?

My first thoughts are of video settings/drivers being incorrect.
Try making sure the correct monitor is selected, then unchecking the Auto detect PNP monitor box.
I am doubtful of that being the total fix, but most often when I've seen similar behavior, it has been due to video settings.
Also, what kind of chipset is on the motherboard? If you installed any driver patches (or did not install any) for the motherboard chipset, take a look there.
Otherwise ????

If you have a "Hard" modem in there, remove it & try again. Could be a COM port conflict. Just change the jumper on the modem to a free COM port & change the hardware profile in Windows.

MrEd,
This is a brand new install of Win98 (was done on a cleanly formated harddrive 6.4gig) and It is hanging on the reboot on hte startup splash screen. Doesnt have a problem shutting down at all. (have also manually checked all device resorses and cant find anything sharing. (so I dont think its a conflict.)

Underclocked,
The video drivers are correct (pci ATi Mach64) and the monitor is set as a compaq 151FS (so not using any generic settings). The motherboard is a Epox MVP3G-M with all the current drivers (have one other exact board and it works perfectly)

This machine doesnt have a modem in it. Have also tried it with ALL the com ports disabled and still the problem.

Any other Ideas?

Have you tried changing the shutdown option from slow to quick or quick to slow?

All the current drivers being the current Via drivers? Put back the MS drivers except for the miniport driver and see what happens.

This wouldn't happen to be a Western Digital drive in there is it?Make sure you have the most recent bios update.
Also try turning udma off and setting your pio mode to 3.
Take a look at epox site they have a coupla faq's on their mb's and some hd manufacturers.
Had that exact same problem with that same board and a 10.1 gb wd drive.
Do not install the via busmaster drivers just use the 98 defaults.

Do you have any drives (zip, etc) that need to have support disabled on the motherboard? When I put my zip in, i tried to let the system support it, as well as Iomega software. They conflicted, and my system wouldn't boot, when it did it would crash after five minutes. Don't know if this helps, but hope so.

Well thatnks for all the suggestions but I went ahead and installed Windows2000 on the computer and Windows2000 works just fine! I really cant for the life of me figure out why Win98 refused to work properly! ( I have 1 other system that is IDENTICAL in every way that works perfectly with win98). But like I said I have it working perfectly now with Windows 2000.....I have it setup dual booting now so I can still try and figure out whats up with Win98 (after a couple of days away from it /forum/smile.gif )

try removing or disabling ALL advanced power
mangement settings in device manager and in cmos setup.sounds like a conflict between the bios and windows

I'd have to agree with Envy - check out the BIOS - compare the two versions on boot-up between the working & non-working systems.
Same board is no guarentee of same bios....
