This is a strange one that i haven't come across before. Every time i tell win98 SE to shut down the computer goes through the motions of shutting down then promptly reboots itself and loads windows again. I haven't changed anything that i can think of that should have caused this as it wasn't happening a week ago. The only possible thing is that i have flashed the BIOS of my BX2000 board but can't think that this would cause the prob.
Any ideas???
cheers

Flashing the bios may very well have done it, especially if this is the only thing you have done. I've had similar problems before, where windows reboots automatically.

My guess is that windows is triggering something in the bios that used to shut down the machine, and now results in a reboot. I've been told that there are things that can be disabled, like fast shutdown. Try that, if it doesn't work, tell us and we'll see what else we can come up with.

BTW, I sincerely hope someone has a workable solution, because the last time I ran into this problem, I fixed it by replacing the mobo and reloading windows.

Good Luck!

Go to the windows update site and download the "Shutdown patch" This should eliviate the problem. It is quite a common problem, especially on boards using newer Award Bios.
Or, do what I did, go to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information>Tools>System Configuration Utility>Advanced>DISABLE FAST SHUTDOWN.

Thanks guys,
I actually tried turning off fast shutdown last night and it all works happily. I'd forgotten i'd turned it on in the first place. Could have saved you all the hassles of remembering the answer.
