Microsoft has revealed plans to release a third service pack for its Windows XP operating system.

"There will be a Service Pack 3 for Windows XP," Bernard Ourghanlian, technical and security director at Microsoft France, confirmed, revealing that Microsoft's OS is set for another major update.

Windows XP's Service Pack 2, which came out last September, deeply modified the operating system by updating its security.

Windows XP SP3 will be available sometime next year--after the launch of Windows Vista, which "is the priority for the development teams," according to Microsoft France.

Microsoft has yet to reveal details about the contents of the service pack. Laurent Delaporte of Microsoft France said: "Historically, certain functions of new versions of Windows are integrated in the service packs of previous versions."

Wow....I hope its not as buggy as Sp2 when it came out.

I wouldn't say SP2 was buggy. It added a lot of security lockdowns that software developers were slow to address.

I don't see the same situation happening with SP3 since the developers have had time to correct SP2 in compatibilities. No promises, though. :p

I only had one problem with SP2, and it really wasn't SP2's fault. On an ASUS P4P800-E board, using SATA raid I needed to update the BIOS before the system would boot into windows with SP2 installed. Thats the only problem i've ever had.

The only other times i've seen people have problems with it is when they have a totally thrashed and infected system that doesn't work right to begin with, and they think installing a service pack will cure all their problems.

SP2 only served to highlight problems that many didn't realise they had, or knew they had, but hoped would be fixed with the install! I used SP2 from RC1 without issue.

SP3 may be more about Digital Rights protection than anything else - we shall see.

I happen to be in Seattle at a MS conference. Was told last night MS quit developing XP when Vista went Alpha. Going to ask another person or two this morning to confirm...

Man, that must be awesome. I would go, but it's a long flight (or swim) for me to get there. :(

This may have something or other to do with the XP update.

Then again, it may not.

One element of "multi tiered data protection" will support full volume encryption to prevent disk access by other operating systems. The system partition is encrypted, hibernation files and your data as well.

Apparently there will be an SP3. No one wanted to even attempt to guess when it would be released.

What is it about ppl who keep on insisting that SP2 is buggy?
The beta releases weren't great, and that was only to be expected, but when the final SP was released all of these issues had been fixed.
The only problem I have ever seen with it, is that various canon multifunction printers needed a small patch to work. Probably because they accessed the OS using an insecure method that SP2 successfully blocked.

I have a friend who refuses to install SP2 and has had to put up with messenger spam because of his reluctance to install it. His decision is based on tales of horror from a friend; a friend who hasn't actually installed SP2 either but has been told horror stories from one of his friends who probably hasn't installed it yet either.
Its like the frigging blind leading the frigging blind and none of them are prepared to open their eyes, admit they are wrong, and have safer computers in the future.

"We have not confirmed plans for a Service Pack 3 for Windows XP yet," said Michael Burk, product manager for Windows Vista. "At this point, the Windows servicing team is reviewing the feedback on Windows XP SP2 and is still evaluating timing and alternatives for the next Windows XP servicing release."talk about letting the cat out of the bag!
