I have somehow ( stupidly ) disabled my primary master hard drive cache and the drive just crawls - wish I knew how, so I could re-enable it. Primary slave works just fine.
It's a Quantum Fireball ST 6.4G and Quantum tech support don't want to know me - probably in case my stupidity rubs off.
Are there any guys or gals out there who can help me become a little wiser and solve this? problem

Well, the 1st place I would check is the BIOS...

I can't remember having seen a setting which says: enable/disable HD cache... but you never know !
