JW310 10-20-1999, 02:00 AM In Win98 (and I believe, Win95, too) you go into the System Properties window, and go to the 'Performance' tab. Along the bottom of that window, under 'Advanced Settings' should be a button labeled 'File System...'. Click on this button, and you should be able to switch the typical role of the computer to Network Server. JW bigslammer 10-20-1999, 02:01 AM control panel then System icon, then Performance tab, then it's under the file system tab. hope that helps bigslammer 10-20-1999, 02:03 AM funny, I was typing and when I posted there was already a message posted(1 min ahead of me) so disregard my posts. JW310 10-20-1999, 02:06 AM bigslammer, sorry I beat you to the reply.... we both gave the same info, just with mine being more descriptive, and yours being short and to the point.... either way, chip, you'll get to the setting JW chipbgt 10-20-1999, 02:13 AM ok, lets see who can answer this quicker: I was using cacheman settings beforehand....i think either "power user" or "multimedia" ...is this network server setting better than the other ones? thanks again Vampiel 10-20-1999, 03:15 AM Yes network server setting will increase the performance of your HD, microsoft doesnt mess around when it comes to corperation networks, but when it comes to home users it seems like bill gates is doing some big rat experiment to see how much $$$ he can pump out of the public, and likes to slow down your computer with worthless options and uneccessary files. Theres even a 2second delay when it loads windows, for no reason, just a 2 second delay to get rid of it do the following : 1. Remove the read only and hidden attributes on MSDOS.SYS in the root directory on your windows drive. 2. Make a backup copy of MSDOS.SYS to MSDOS.OLD. 3. Edit MSDOS.SYS with notepad 4. Find or add a line containing the appropriate settings. These are the recommended values a) BootDelay=0, removes the two second delay when the PC starts. b) AutoScan=2, automatically runs scandisk when Windows does not shutdown properly. Only available in Windows 95B(4.00.1111) or later. c) DblSpace=0 (do not set to 0 if you are using disk compression), disables automatic loading of the DoubleSpace disk compression driver. d) DrvSpace=0 (do not set to 0 if you are using disk compression), disables the automatic loading of the DriveSpace disk compression driver. 5. Save MSDOS.SYS. then restart your computer for more info. and tips this has been posted before, but its a good site so ill post it again www.pureperformance.com (http://www.pureperformance.com) [This message has been edited by Vampiel (edited 10-20-1999).] deep_sky 10-20-1999, 03:27 AM its a windows products. I think it must be a business rule for microsoft that all their products must have a certain amount of worthless options and unnecessary files. The more bugs the better SysOpt.com
