Hi peoples,
ok, a question concerning the installation of a graphics card. Three days back, i bought a new card and installed it in my PC. Ok, the thing is, I took the old one out at the same time. Made sense to do this. I installed its drivers and control panel from the CD, then went online and got the latest drivers from the site. Ok, simple enough right?. Better say what card I had and what I updated to here I thinks.
Card I had was a 2d/3d combo based on the voodoo rush chipset, with a 6mb total memory. The new card is a voodoo banshee pci/agp with 16mb on board.
Ok, thing is, I'm not sure if I set this up right. Once I had the new drivers in, and a fresh re-boot, I thought I'd test it with Final Reality. (for those not sure, it’s a benchmarking tool. :O}) Well, It ran like a bag of doggy doo doo. To put it simply. Now I was miffed and couldn't understand why. (should have seen my face. waiting for my graphics to jump outta the screen, like an Intel advert or something. haha.) Anyways, I put DirectX7 in, and still the same. Then I took a look at the DirectX Diagnostic tool, and under "display", the tab for button for AGP support, says "not available". Is this because DirectX doesn’t support AGP, or because I did something wrong?
Something else that was wrong, was that my son couldn't play his Half-life game in Glide, only Direct3D. I read the readme and it says that for the Banshee you must have the latest glide drivers. Well, as I’ve said, I got them all. This leads me to the point of removing the old card at the same time as installing the new one. I went on a reading spree to root the prob, and it says something about leaving the old card in and using what they term, as a glide switch. Otherwise I can’t switch my glide. Ok, now I had lost myself. Hahaha.
So now I don’t know what I must do. I'm only learning this stuff as I need, so I’m not that great at finding the faults when they happen. Basically there’s no real improvement in performance with this new card, and I "WAS" expecting more. Can any of you point me the right way, so I can figure this out??..
Thanks all that read and respond,
